PDP Crisis Deepens: Wike, Fayose and Others Expelled by Party in Ibadan Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the expulsion of a number of its senior members, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, as part of a sharply intensifying internal power struggle. The decision was taken at the party’s national convention in Ibadan, with a motion moved by Chief Bode George and supported by other top delegates.

According to the party, the expelled members are guilty of “anti-party activities,” which, according to sources, include coordinating litigation, acting against party interest, and refusing to support key decisions taken by the party leadership. The expulsion was passed unanimously during the convention.

Also targeted in the motion were former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and several others who have been vocal in their dissent on internal party matters. George, a founding figure in the party, argued that their continued presence is a threat to the unity and future viability of the PDP.

The vote came shortly after Kabiru Turaki (SAN) was elected National Chairman during the same convention, and it underscored the depth of the rift within the party. Observers say the expulsions are part of a broader plan to consolidate power under a new leadership aligned with the convention’s direction.

In response, a faction loyal to Wike has planned emergency meetings — including sessions of the NEC and the Board of Trustees. They intend to challenge the legitimacy of the expulsions, describing them as illegitimate and politically motivated.

Political analysts note that the move could dramatically reshape the PDP’s internal dynamics. By removing high-profile dissenters, the newly empowered faction might be laying the groundwork for a restructured party — but at the risk of alienating long-time members and sparking legal challenges.

Some party elders and state leaders are already expressing concern. Local government chairmen in Oyo State have publicly backed the motion, but critics argue that the expulsions may deepen fractures rather than heal them. The question now: will reconciliation or further splits define the PDP’s path forward?

For Wike and his allies, the coming days are critical. Their reaction — whether through court action, grassroots mobilisation, or counter-organising — will determine whether this expulsion is a terminal blow or just another chapter in the PDP’s long-running internal crisis.
