PDP Crisis: Makinde Camp Fumes as INEC Recognises Wike Bloc

The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new and volatile turn following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially recognize the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. This development has sparked outrage within the camp of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who has been a major stakeholder in the party’s recent restructuring efforts.

The latest twist in the power struggle centers on INEC’s acceptance of the National Working Committee (NWC) list and leadership structure backed by the Wike bloc. Sources indicate that the electoral umpire cited recent court judgments as the basis for its decision to deal exclusively with the Wike-aligned officials, effectively sidelining the faction supported by Governor Makinde and other key PDP governors. This recognition gives the Wike camp control over the party’s administrative machinery, including the conduct of primaries and congresses.

Reacting to the development, high-ranking officials in the Makinde camp have expressed fierce opposition, describing INEC’s action as a "rape of democracy" and a calculated attempt to destabilize the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections. They accused the commission of compromising its neutrality by seemingly doing the bidding of the FCT Minister, who serves in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration while maintaining a grip on the PDP.

"INEC’s decision to recognize a faction that is clearly working against the interest of the PDP is alarming. This is a flagrant disregard for the party’s constitution and pending legal processes," a source within the Makinde camp stated. They vowed to challenge the recognition in court, insisting that the party’s internal organs are the only bodies empowered to determine its leadership, not an external regulator.

Conversely, the Wike-backed faction has welcomed the recognition as a vindication of their legitimacy. They argued that they have always followed due process and that INEC’s decision merely aligns with the rule of law. Political analysts view this development as a significant blow to Governor Makinde’s influence within the party and a consolidation of Wike’s hold, further widening the rift between the two former allies who were once the driving force of the G5 Governors.
