The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of 30 individuals suspected of dealing in Indian hemp and other illicit substances. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo on Monday. She stated that the arrests were the result of coordinated raids executed simultaneously in identified criminal hideouts following actionable intelligence.
According to DSP John, the Command has intensified its operations to dismantle networks that threaten the safety and future of the state. "No fewer than 30 suspects are currently in custody, while 20 will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations," she revealed. The raids also led to the recovery of significant quantities of suspected prohibited drugs.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has directed that the fight against drug trafficking be sustained without interruption. He issued a firm warning to those involved in the trade to cease immediately or vacate the state. "Akwa Ibom is no longer a safe operating ground for drug barons and peddlers. Those who disregard this final warning will face relentless enforcement actions," the PPRO quoted the Commissioner as saying.
DSP John emphasized the link between illicit drugs and other crimes such as cultism and armed robbery, stating that the Command would not stand by and watch youths being lured into addiction and social decay. She called on parents, traditional institutions, and community stakeholders to partner with the police by providing credible information to safeguard their communities.
