The House of Representatives has scheduled an emergency plenary session for Tuesday to address concerns surrounding the 2027 general election dates announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement issued on Friday night by the House Spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, members were notified of the emergency sitting through an internal memo from the Office of the Speaker.
The core issue necessitating this recall is the timing of the elections. On Friday, INEC fixed the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, with the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections to follow on March 6, 2027. These dates directly coincide with major religious fasting periods for both Muslims and Christians.
According to the Islamic calendar (1448 AH), Ramadan is projected to begin around February 8, 2027, and conclude on March 10, 2027. Similarly, the Christian Lenten season will commence on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027, running through March 27. This overlap implies that the general elections will be conducted while millions of Nigerians are observing their respective fasts—a situation analysts warn could significantly impact voter mobilization, participation, and turnout.
Spokesperson Akin Rotimi stated that the emergency session will allow lawmakers to review the constitutional and national implications of the timetable and take necessary legislative action. "The emergency sitting reflects the resolve of the House to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for the nation's democratic process," Rotimi said. He assured Nigerians that the House remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions through responsive lawmaking.
