AfCFTA to Drive Growth and Prosperity in Oyo – Mene, Lawal Declare

Speaking at the official launch of the Oyo State Sub-National Implementation Strategy for AfCFTA, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Mene noted that Oyo’s embrace of the continental trade framework positions it as a model of resilience and competitiveness. He emphasized that the initiative will strengthen trade, empower farmers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, and the youth, while raising living standards.

He praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his foresight in recognizing the opportunities AfCFTA offers, describing the launch as a “bold step” that places Oyo at the forefront of Africa’s integration drive.

Acting Governor Lawal, who represented Governor Makinde, said the strategy is proof that Oyo is intentional about its economic future. According to him, the plan will not only prepare farmers, artisans, and SMEs for export but also attract investors, reduce poverty, and diversify the state’s economy by focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and the creative industry.

He stressed that Oyo is the first sub-national government in Africa to adopt an AfCFTA implementation strategy, adding that the state is positioning itself to tap into the $1.4 billion African market. Lawal explained that while foreign trade policy remains under the Federal Government, states have powers over local infrastructure, SME development, and investment promotion—making Oyo’s proactive step both legal and strategic.

The Special Adviser to Governor Makinde on International Trade and AfCFTA, Ms. Neo Theodore Tlhaselo, described the strategy as a call to action, built on five pillars: productive capacity and value chain, trade facilitation and infrastructure, market access and export readiness, finance and investment mobilization, and institutional framework with monitoring.

Diplomats from Rwanda and Sierra Leone also hailed the launch, describing it as a landmark achievement that will not only boost Oyo’s economy but also inspire other African states to align with AfCFTA goals.

The event drew top government officials, diplomats, traditional rulers, and development partners, with dignitaries commending Oyo State for setting the pace in Africa’s economic integration journey.
