Suspend Entertainment Levy Now – Oyo APC Tells Governor Makinde Amid Public Outcry

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to immediately suspend the newly-imposed entertainment levy, citing widespread public discontent and economic strain on residents already coping with rising living costs.

In a statement released on behalf of the state party, APC leaders described the entertainment levy as “ill-timed, punitive and likely to push our youth and small entertainment businesses into crisis.” They argued the timing—parallel with inflation, energy costs, and general welfare pressures—makes the levy an unfair burden on consumers, performers and industry workers alike.

The party pointed out that unofficial feedback from nightlife operators, event planners, musicians and venue owners indicates a significant drop in bookings, venue usage and participation since news of the levy emerged. According to the APC, many entertainment-industry workers are now at risk of job loss, while grassroots citizens may be discouraged from social gatherings, reducing economic activity in associated sectors such as hospitality, transport, food and beverages.

Highlighting political ramifications, the APC said the levy has become a “flashpoint” issue capable of galvanising youth discontent and undermining public confidence in governance. The party called for an urgent review of the policy and proposed that any revenue measure targeting recreation should be deferred until the state economic environment stabilises and consultations with stakeholders are thoroughly concluded.

The APC’s appeal included recommendations:

• A temporary moratorium on enforcement of the entertainment levy until engagements with industry stakeholders and public hearings are completed.

• Formation of a stakeholder task-force including government, event-industry representatives and youth groups to evaluate the impact of the levy and explore alternative revenue sources that do not penalise vulnerable workers.

• Improvement of transparency and accountability in how revenue from the entertainment sector will be utilised—especially for youth empowerment, cultural development and local business support.

In closing, the state APC urged Governor Makinde to “listen to the people” and reconsider the timing and structure of the entertainment levy. It warned that without swift action, the policy could become a liability rather than a benefit for Oyo State’s economy and youth potential.
