Xabi Alonso has announced that he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the current season, as he is expected to return to Real Madrid as head coach. According to Sky in Germany, Alonso informed Leverkusen of his decision, paving the way for him to succeed Carlo Ancelotti after the latter wraps up his campaign.
Having enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Real Madrid, where he achieved considerable success, Alonso has quickly risen as a notable coaching talent since taking over at Leverkusen in 2022. He was previously regarded as a potential candidate to replace Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool following Klopp’s anticipated departure, but the club opted for Arne Slot instead.
During his tenure at Leverkusen, Alonso led the team to a historic league and cup double last season, marking the club's first Bundesliga title. They narrowly missed achieving an unbeaten treble, suffering a defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League final.
In related news, Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly back in discussions to become the next head coach of Brazil's national team after initial talks had stalled. Ancelotti is set to leave Real Madrid just a year after securing both the Champions League and La Liga titles.
