New Mineral-Data Template to Boost Mining Remittance, Says Oyo Governor

New Mineral-Data Template to Boost Mining Remittance, Says Oyo Governor

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has welcomed the introduction of a new data‐rendition template for the solid minerals sector, calling it a “game-changer” in Nigeria’s push to diversify revenue and ensure mining proceeds are properly remitted and monitored.

The template, developed at the federal level, standardises how minerals produced, licences, fees, permits and operator details are reported and tracked. It is designed to prevent revenue leakages, improve transparency, and ensure that mining companies’ activities translate into tangible fiscal returns for both states and the federation.

Governor Makinde noted that Oyo State stands to benefit from rigorous implementation of the template: “This tool gives us the chance to ensure that every tonne extracted, every licence issued, and every fee collected is accounted for,” he said. He added that mining activities in Oyo, including those in the Ibarapa-Oke-Ogun region, will now be better captured, regulated and leveraged for local development.

Officials within the state’s Ministry of Mines and Solid Minerals highlighted that previously many mining operations went under-reported or their revenues under-remitted, limiting the state’s ability to invest in infrastructure and communities impacted by extraction. With the template, the state plans to align local data systems with the national framework, upgrade monitoring capacity, and ensure that mineral wealth contributes directly to jobs, road projects and community welfare.

Analysts say the move signals a shift in Nigeria’s mineral sector—from informal extraction and weak oversight to formalised, data-driven regulation. The template’s success, they warn, depends on rigorous enforcement, coordination between federal and state agencies, and effective follow-through to convert data into remittance and development.

Governor Makinde concluded by urging mining operators in Oyo to cooperate, register fully, and operate transparently. “Our expectation is clear: mining must benefit every community, not just the company. Data must translate into development,” he emphasised.
